Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors! For those new to this, fellow writers post eight sentences from one of our works.
I’m spotlighting my upcoming release, MUST LOVE BREECHES, until its release in September. Some of you veterans from Six Sentence Sunday will remember this story, though the opening has changed a lot. Please note, that it is currently with the copyeditor, so this is an unedited version. Skipping ahead to the end of the first chapter, where she’s still at the ball and fingering her silver calling card case:
“Wouldn’t that be amazing, to truly be at this ball in 1834?” she whispered. The silver under her thumb flared with heat.
The room spun; the air, colors, and sounds muted, as if she were inside an abstract watercolor painting. Her heart—Oh, God—spun, swirling about to match the room, each beat a slow thunk, stretched.
Shit, the room spun faster. She flung out a hand to steady herself against the wall and met only air.
What the—? She slammed her eyes shut and fought a slug of nausea.

About MUST LOVE BREECHES
“A fresh, charming new voice” – New York Times bestselling author Tessa Dare
HOW FAR WOULD YOU TRAVEL FOR LOVE?
Isabelle Rochon, a thoroughly modern American working at the British Museum, has finally met the man of her dreams. There’s one problem: he lives in another century.
When a mysterious artifact zaps Isabelle to pre-Victorian London, a thief steals it, stranding her in a place where nobody’s heard of toilet paper or women’s lib. Now she must find the artifact, navigate the pitfalls of a stiffly polite London, keep her origins a secret, and, oh, resist her growing attraction to Lord Montagu, the Vicious Viscount so hot, he curls her toes. But when he asks her to pose as his fiancée for his scheme of revenge, his now constant presence overthrows her equilibrium and kicks in her old insecurities. Why does he have to be so damn hunky, compelling and, well, Drool-Worthy? This is not what she needs. She’d carved off part of herself for another man before and is determined never to make that same mistake again. Staying would be the ultimate follow-the-boyfriend move. In the end, she must decide when her true home lies.

I really love the description in the second paragraph.
Yes, a silver card case would be a temptation to a thief.
I think I missed how the earlier version of the story started so I’m glad to finally see it now. Vivid description. 🙂
I like the turn this story is taking.

Nice narrating and details. I really liked the silver under her thumb flaring with heat bit.
Great descriptions. I can feel her disorientation. Nicely done. 🙂
I like “slug of nausea”: it works as a “hit” of nausea, and also that slimy lump that clogs up your throat when you feel nauseated. 😀
I have vertigo now LOL. Terrific description, got me totally involved with what was going on. The excellent snippet reeled me in and wouldn’t let go!
