Be Careful What You Wish For!

I must have a thing for wishes because my first novel to go on submission, MUST LOVE BREECHES, is about a modern woman who accidentally wishes herself to 1834 London, England. Ooops! And my first release is about an over-worked software engineer who makes a sarcastic comment to a stranger, and that stranger happens to be a djinn and interprets it as a wish and grants it! It’s a novelette called BEER AND GROPING IN LAS VEGAS, and releases on December 19th. If you’re interested, comment below and I will give away one free ebook when it becomes available!

Here’s the opening, up to when her wish is stated:

Mirjam rubbed the tiredness from her eyes, but the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland still occupied the Rivenbark Hotel & Casino elevator with her. She blinked and squinted. Yep. And life-size. Complete with hookah.

Plastic squeaked against glass as the caterpillar shifted to make more room. It made eye contact.

“Er, nice costume,” Mirjam ventured.

“Thanks,” came the muffled reply.

The elevator swooped to a stop on the mezzanine level. A pirate and a Ghostbuster stepped on and pushed the lobby button. Mirjam angled back to avoid being knocked over by the guy’s Proton Pack.

“Convention?” Mirjam asked the caterpillar and it rewarded her with a nod.

Mirjam groaned inwardly. She’d attended her share, but now, they reminded her too much of The Turd, otherwise known as Brian. Great. She wanted to go home but apparently, that was asking too much—a blizzard in Ann Arbor nixed her flight this morning. Next chance to get out—tomorrow.

The elevator dinged at the lobby, and she headed to the hotel bar. Maybe she could salvage the day by squeezing in some work.

“What can I get you?” The bartender sported a headband with gold, sparkly antennae in her pink, cropped hair.

Mirjam pulled out her laptop. “Sprite, please.” Only a few others populated the bar, too early for drinking. Though this was Vegas. Pink Hair Lady plopped down Mirjam’s drink, the stir stick topped by a wiggling green rubber alien.

“So, which convention is this?” Mirjam motioned to a couple of Spartans walking by, though they probably shouldn’t have chosen that look.

“It’s ConVegas—sci-fi, fantasy, pop culture, that kind of thing. Doesn’t start until tomorrow, but we always get some folks early. What brings you here?”

“AppExpo that ended last night.” Mirjam connected to the hotel’s free WiFi. Time to figure out what caused her new app to choke while compiling.

Pink Hair Lady cocked her hip, fist resting on the bone. “Lemme guess. You’re always working, aren’t you?” She slid a glass bowl of pistachios over. “This is Vegas. You should be out having fun.”

Fun. Pfft. No time for that. “My flight got canceled and the timing blows. Too much to do. I didn’t want to come, but my partner thought it might be good for business.”

“Was it?”

Mirjam shrugged and pulled up and scanned her code, hoping her fixed focus on the laptop would clue Chatty One to leave her alone.

“I’m Jenn, by the way.”

Mirjam peeked up and pasted on a smile. “Nice to meet you.” She tracked back to the code.

The bartender left to help another customer but returned her inquisitive butt a few minutes later. “So, Vegas at your feet and your nose is to the grindstone. This is truly what you wish to do with your unexpected free night?”

Mirjam gritted her teeth. If Jenn would stop pestering her, she might be able to figure out the rendering bug. “No. If I had my wish, I’d spend it having hot sex with the man of my dreams, but since that’s not going to happen…” she snapped.

The bartender’s eyes flashed for a second. Or had they literally flashed?

About the book:

Can a djinn and a magic slot machine bring two geeks together?

Riley McGregor is a geek trapped in a Good Ole Boy body and as owner of a microbrewery, smart chicks never look at him twice.

Rejected by a geek who wanted to “trade up,” Mirjam Linna would rather immerse herself in work than be the girlfriend-of-the-moment. Stranded in a Vegas hotel, she makes a wish—a night of hot sex with the man of her dreams. It’s granted. She agrees to dinner, but afterward, she’ll say thanks, but no thanks, and see what’s on the SyFy channel. But when they meet, they’re surprised to find they had a shared connection in their past. Sparks fly as these two learn to be in the moment, be themselves and find love.

Fans of Star Trek, Star Wars, Monty Python, Firefly and Marvin the Martian will enjoy this romantic comedy.

Six Sentence Sunday – 12/2/12

Welcome to #SixSunday!

Today’s Six Sunday I’m continuing with my upcoming release, BEER AND GROPING IN LAS VEGAS due out December 19. As we’re getting closer to the due date, things are starting to happen! You can now add it to your Goodreads shelf, and I’ve also created a page for it on my website which will have updated buy links as they become available.

Things went so well at dinner, that Mirjam’s invited him up to her room. They’re now in the elevator and he’s just finished asking her if she was sure she wanted this (he’s holding her face looking at her). This is in her POV:

Tapping into a seldom-used, inner streak of boldness, she moved her head and kissed his palm. Her tongue darted out, tracing his lifeline. His breath hitched, and she swore his rich, brown eyes darkened.

Wham. She glommed onto him like white plastic on a Stormtrooper, shamelessly pressing against his body, groping and kissing. He groaned, a good groan, cinched his arms around her waist, and spun them until her back hit the elevator wall.

Six Sentence Sunday – 11/25/12

Welcome to #SixSunday! For my American friends, I hope you had a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday! I will be traveling back today, but hope to visit everyone either before I leave or after I return.

Today’s Six Sunday I’m continuing with my upcoming release, BEER AND GROPING IN LAS VEGAS due out December 19. We’re skipping ahead to later. Riley is with his blind date having dinner and they’re getting along well. Riley’s the first to talk and we’re in Riley’s POV:

Their conversation meandered to the endless Hollywood remakes. “My theory on the whole thing is…Well, it’s…Jeez, what’s the alcohol content of this beer anyway?” He peered at the frosted mug as if it were stenciled on the glass.

“Spit it out, Miss Anne Elk.”

His head jerked up. A Monty Python fan?

Six Sentence Sunday – 11/18/12

Welcome to #SixSunday!

Today’s Six Sunday I’m continuing with my upcoming release, BEER AND GROPING IN LAS VEGAS due out December 19. We’re skipping ahead to later, when the hero is being escorted to meet Mirjam, his blind date (and the one featured the last two weeks):

[Riley's] date faced the far wall, head tilted to the full moon looming above. Torchlight flickered across the ash-blonde hair tumbling down her back. He swallowed hard. Shit, if he were the romantic type, he’d be in hog heaven with this setting.

She slowly turned and faced him.

His breath caught. Dear God, he was in heaven.

Welcome to #SixSunday! I’m sorry I didn’t make it around to y’all last Sunday, I’m going to make a herculean effort to do so today!

Today’s Six Sunday I’m continuing with my upcoming release, BEER AND GROPING IN LAS VEGAS due out December 19. Last week featured the first 6 lines, and today we’re picking up exactly where we left off:

Six Sentence Sunday – 10/21/12

Welcome to #SixSunday!

NEWS: This week MUST LOVE BREECHES won 1st place in FF&P’s On the Far Side contest in the time travel/steampunk/historical category and a full request from the judging editor. It also finaled yesterday in the Windy City Four Seasons Contest, paranormal category.

Today’s Six Sunday is from STEAM ME UP, RAWLEY, my steampunk romance set in Mobile, AL. I’m skipping a couple of lines from last week’s entry. Setup is that he’s just rescued a lady from a frightened horse on the busy streets of Mobile and the heroine witnessed it and in the part we’re skipping she exclaims how heroic he’d been. This is in his POV and he’s the first speaker:

“There was nothing heroic at all in my actions. Please, do not read more into it. It only required a calm demeanor and a firm hand.”

This didn’t seem to dispel her misconception. She only smiled, which lit up her whole face, her eyes dancing merrily. “You are too modest, sir, I know your game–I’m onto you.”

As always I welcome constructive feedback.

Six Sentence Sunday – 10/14/12

I’m back after almost a month! I missed y’all!

NEWS: I landed an agent! I actually had three offers! I want to thank all of you who have regularly commented since I started doing #sixsunday almost a year ago. Your support kept me thinking positive even when I faced rejections! Some of you even helped Beta! THANK YOU! This doesn’t necessarily mean a publisher will buy it, but I’m one step closer….

Today’s Six Sunday is from STEAM ME UP, RAWLEY, my steampunk romance set in Mobile, AL. I’m skipping to the next day and we’re finally in Rawley’s POV. He’s outside standing in the rain after calming an agitated horse and our heroine arrives, breathless (It’s been a while, but here’s a link to an earlier SSS entry where Rawley gave the heroine a scandalous peek at his neck when they first met the previous day, so as to put his reflections about his disheveled state in perspective):

Her hat, a frivolous contraption, sat at a jaunty angle on her head. His fingers itched to push it up to sit properly. Over all, she held a large yellow umbrella, protecting her from the blasted rain. He shoved fingers through his wet hair, inwardly cursing to find himself again in a disheveled state before her. The same unsettling feeling as yesterday overtook him, as if his body couldn’t determine if it was about to step off a cliff or fall into a luxuriant, buoyant cloud.

She stepped close, admitting him to her protected space.

As always I welcome constructive feedback.

Six Sentence Sunday – 9/16/12

Today is #sixsunday where writers share six sentences from their work.

NEWS: MUST LOVE BREECHES finaled in Heart of Denver’s Molly contest in the paranormal category! I also finally finished polishing the sucker and sent it out into query land–fingers crossed!

Today’s Six Sunday is from STEAM ME UP, RAWLEY, my steampunk romance set in Mobile, AL. Everyone, including the new boarder Dr. Rawley, is sitting down to dinner. They’ve been eating and talking away for a bit when their automaton butler comes in to announce breakfast instead of dinner. The heroine’s brother Robert was asked if he could fix it and he makes a bad pun about his mechanical left hand. This picks up exactly where we left off:

Everyone else groaned at the poor pun, but Adele flinched, horrified he could joke about the loss of his hand. She turned back to Dr. Rawley and asked, “Why did you cross the Atlantic if you’re not the adventuresome sort? And why Mobile?”

The door shut behind Robert and Walter, and she relaxed a fraction.

Her father interrupted. “Adele, let the poor man have a proper supper without you badgering him.”

As always I welcome constructive feedback.

Six Sentence Sunday – 9/9/12

I’m back! Dragon*Con was a lot of fun, and will try to post an update soon. Today is #sixsunday where writers share six sentences from their work.

NEWS: MUST LOVE BREECHES finaled in FF&P’s On the Far Side contest (time travel/steampunk/historical category) last weekend, and this weekend, it came in first in the Celtic Hearts Golden Claddagh contest in the paranormal category!

The heroine’s brother Robert was asked if he could fix it. This picks up exactly where we left off:

“I’ll see to it right now. I’ll just get some of Camilla’s delicious pie to fortify myself.”

“I thought you were an archaeologist?” Dr. Rawley asked.

“You were not misinformed, however, I do like to keep my hand in all things mechanical.” Robert winked and held up his mechanical left hand.

As always I welcome constructive feedback.
