Six Sentence Sunday – 6/17/12

Today is #sixsunday where writers share six sentences from their work. Today I’m sharing sentences of my new novel, STEAM ME UP, RAWLEY. I finished the rough draft only last month ago, so this is pretty rough. It’ll probably get revised a ton, but this will give you a rough idea.

I apologize for being largely absent last Sunday visiting y’all! Our power went out from the storm at 9 a.m. and we didn’t get it back on until that evening, combined with family visiting it proved too much… I WILL visit today!

This is a steampunk romance set in 1890 Mobile, Alabama, and a loose sequel to MUST LOVE BREECHES. The female protagonist is a reporter and she’s marched into the office of her boss to demand to write more challenging pieces. He’s being a jerk and she starts to day dream about her pet monkey, Loki, wreaking havoc on Mr. Tonti’s desk. Then, as he continued being a jerk and ignoring her, it progressed to this. When I wrote this, I had not idea the heroine had such a violent streak.

Now Loki was pulling out his left eyeball in her imagination. A nice satisfying pop as it came free. Now the other one. Yes, and with other items plucked off his person, Loki juggling them on his desk. And still Mr. Tonti worked on, unfazed.

His face turned up and glared at her with his healthy and decidedly whole eyes.

As always I welcome constructive feedback. Thank you!

  1. Cool Six Angela. I love writing scenes out just to discover what my characters are capable of. As you’ve discovered, some of the best stuff comes out that way! 😀

  2. Haha, don’t you love it when your character surprises you like that? Besides, who does like a little bit of fun dismemberment?

    *crickets*

    Um, anybody? Bueller?

  3. boy she really hates the guy – and has a blood thirsty imagination. I note she doesn’t do this damage but the monkey does.

  4. LOLOLOL! This is too good! Lovin’ your heroine, lovin’ the monkey–and the name for her boss: “Mr. Tonti” PERFECT. Even his name makes him sound tight-assed and assholish. Great six!

  5. Violent streak? No, my dear. Right now it’s just a wickedly wonderful imagination. It becomes a streak when she starts leaving streaks on the wall, if you know what I mean. 😉

  6. Love her imagination. BTW, as a Jane Austin fan, you might be interested that our author booth at the farmers’ market is right next to that of a quiller. She pointed me to quilling in Sense and Sensibility–I’ll have to reread to find the place. Also get some photos of her work for my blog.

  7. Gross, but I totally get her agitation, lol. I hope you just wrote what she told you. I wouldn’t want to mess with a character that has that imagination 😉

  8. LOL. A new twist on visualizing someone naked. And Loki doing the damage (instead of visualizing herself doing it) makes it palatable and even humorous. 🙂

  9. She seems to be totally different from your heroine in BREECHES. It’s an cool difference. She’s clearly not shy of the dark and twisted. I just love that her fantasy is completed through Loki.
